Government
Oligarchic Republic
The Kingdom of Drakmore is governed by an oligarchic republic, where power rests with a select group of influential merchant families. These families, known as the "Sea Lords," hold sway over Drakmore's political and economic affairs through a council that makes decisions affecting the kingdom. Each family has a representative in the council, and they elect a "High Mariner" every five years to oversee the administration of the kingdom and its extensive maritime ventures.
Culture and society
Drakmore's culture is deeply rooted in the sea, with most of its traditions, festivals, and daily life revolving around maritime activities and the bounty of the ocean. The people pride themselves on their navigational skills, shipbuilding expertise, and the ability to negotiate trade deals that span the known world. Art and music in Drakmore often reflect the beauty and perils of the sea, and storytelling, especially tales of adventures and the mysteries of the deep, is a cherished pastime.
Despite the outward appearance of wealth and prosperity, there is a darker undertone to the kingdom's culture. The elite's lavish lifestyle is built on the backs of slaves, many of whom are unseen by the general populace, working in the bowels of ships, hidden estates, or the black markets that operate in the shadows.
Drakmore's society is sharply divided along economic lines, with a wide gap between the wealthy merchant elite and the common folk. The merchant families live in opulent splendor, residing in grand mansions that overlook the sea, while the commoners dwell in the bustling city or in smaller coastal villages, many relying on fishing and trade for their livelihood.
